An open shoe rack keeps your shoes off the floor, but it also keeps them under a layer of dust. This one has a zip-on cover that closes the whole front, so four or five tiers of shoes sit behind a panel you wipe down instead of dust off.

Two widths, 23.6 in and 31.5 in, and two heights, 24.8 in for the four-tier and 31.5 in for the five-tier. Depth is 12.2 in either way. The frame is PP with steel tubes and the front is a zip-on cover; it stands on the floor, so nothing gets screwed into a wall. Black or white.

Best for: an entryway, mudroom or closet floor where shoes pile up; keeping seasonal shoes dust-free without buying a closed cabinet; rentals, because it stands on the floor and leaves the wall alone; four or five tiers of trainers, flats and slippers at 12.2 in of shelf depth.

Not ideal for: boots much longer than 12.2 in heel to toe — that is how deep the shelves are. Not a built-in closet replacement: this is an open rack with a cover, not a wardrobe. Not for a soaking wet porch; the cover wipes down, it does not get hosed off.

How to choose: Count how many pairs you are storing and add one shelf of headroom — that is usually the four-tier. Then measure the wall you have and pick 23.6 in or 31.5 in wide. If the rack is going next to a door, leave room for the cover to zip open.
